GENERATIONS FAMILY TREE SUPPORT
(updated August 2007)

The latest version of Generations is version 8.5a, released by Genealogy.com on the Broderbund label (£19.95 with free delivery Buy). Only v8.5a is compatible with recent versions of Windows such as Windows 2000 and XP. We have now received plenty of feedback from customers indicating that Generations v8.5a also works on Windows Vista (see below for a couple of issues and workarounds).

None of the Sierra releases of Generations such as v4.2, v5.2, v6.0, v8.0, v8.5.1 (and versions in between) are compatible with Windows XP or Vista. People encounter all sorts of weird problems such as not being able to install, DLL errors, not enough memory errors, and not being able to print charts in colour.

Vista issues
Generations v8.5a works well on Windows Vista (extending the life of Generations for several years to come) with the exception of a couple of problems.

(1) It is not possible to change the output path for the Report Folder. The workaround is to set the destination of reports to be RTF, then open the RTF file in your favourite word processor outside of Generations. That works fine.

(2) The Generations Help file (Help menu) does not work on Vista. The solution, kindly provided by Roger Lewis, is to download and install the old WinHlp32.exe file from the Microsoft download centre here

This will enable use of all of the old Windows Help files, but there is one 'problem' with at least the Generations Help as follows:-

A notification can come up saying that there was a problem running the macro (1037), however one clicks on OK, it is still possible to use the help information.

There is a way to enable this macro, but it entails modifying the Registry [Warning: Only tinker with the Windows Registry if you absolutely understand what you are doing -- backup the Registry first!]

To enable WinHelp macros

1. Create registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WinHelp
2. Add value: AllowProgrammaticMacros: DWord = 1

SUPPORT
Support for Generations is good if you know where to go. In addition to our own free unlimited support here (by telephone and e-mail, normally 8am to 8pm 7 days a week), we recommend that you use the following free facilities.
