Pigot & Dean's Directory for Manchester & Salford &c for 1824-5

Ref: LAN1824MAN

The directory contains a street plan of Manchester with street index (though a small section at the top left hand corner is missing) and a Map of the Manufacturing District around Manchester. The maps have each been scanned as two overlapping tiles, the warping of the paper making it impractical to try to stitch the scans together.
In addition to the maps, the directory contains: Advertisements; Post Office details; Appendix of alterations; Alphabetical Directory of Manchester & Salford; Classified Commercial Directory of Manchester & Salford; Lists of Country Manufacturers, Carriers, Coaches, Churches/Chapels & Institutional Officers; Neighbourhood directories as detailed below; Alphabetical Directory for 24 miles around Manchester plus Preston & Runcorn; Lists of London & Provincial Bankers; 1821 Population Statistics for Lancashire, Cheshire & The High Peak Hundred of Derbyshire; Fairs in Lancashire & the Cheshire towns in the directory; Distances between Lancashire & Cheshire market towns.
There are two gaps in page numbering, pp 169 to 188 and pp 292 to 296 inclusive, which occurred in the original directory. There are no missing pages.
In general, the entry for each of the places listed below includes Post Office details; Alphabetical Trades & Professions Directory and (for the larger towns) Carrier details & Coach details.

Gore's Directory of Liverpool & Its Environs 1873 (2 CD Set)
Gore's Directory of Liverpool & Its Environs 1873 (2 CD Set)

Ref: LAN1873LIV

£13.00 Including Delivery

This is an extremely comprehensive directory, giving occupations of the people listed as well as their addresses. In addition, the Appendix includes a wealth of fascinating detail about the area covered. In addition to Liverpool itself, the directory includes Bebington, Bidston, Birkenhead, Eastham (part), Liscard, New Brighton, Oxton, Rock Ferry, Seacombe, Tranmere and Wallasey.
The original directory had a map but, as is so often the case, this is missing from the disbound copy used for scanning. The size of the directory means that we have had to publish it over two CDs. The advertisement section in the original book has not been included as, even using two CDs, there is insufficient space.
On the first CD are Contents, Additions & Alterations; Subscribers to the Liverpool Exchange Newsroom; Numerical Directory (Inhabitants by Street); Trades & Professions Directory; Hotels, Inns & Taverns; Appendix & Addenda and on the second CD the Street Directory and the main Residents Directory.
Some of the scanned pages appear not to be straight. This is a feature of the original book rather than the scanning process.

The copy of the directory used for scanning has lost its covers and its title page. The index pages and the last of the advertisement pages (111/112) are detached and damaged with some textual loss. A section of pages 161/162 (describing townships in Glossop Dale) has been cut out and re-attached at some time with minor textual loss. Part of the advertisement page 105/106 has been cut out.
These factors apart, the 371 directory pages and 112 advertisement pages are complete.
In general, the entry for each of the places listed below includes a Description, Directory of Clergy, Gentry & Private Residents, Alphabetical Trades & Professions Directory, Classified Trades Directory (for larger towns), Post Office & Public Information.
